ROTARY DISTRICT 5020 CONFERENCE

RI Representative and Speakers to the Conference

Dear Brian:

Please accept my best wishes for a productive and successful district conference.  I would like to inform you that Young and I have invited Byung-Rak Tak, Past District Governor, D3670, and his spouse, Jeom Soon Lee, to represent us at your district conference on 24-26 April 2009, Bremerton, Washington.

Rotary will keep the service emphases we have had in so many of our past years, the emphases that are solidly grounded in our knowledge and experience: water, health and hunger, and literacy.  You play a key role in our efforts to focus in each of these areas on children, and on reducing the terrible rate of child mortality in our world.  Together, we will all Make Dreams Real.

Kind regards,

D.K. Lee
President, Rotary International, 2008-09

Letter from D.K. Lee to the District Conference

RI Representative Byung-Rak Tak, Past District Governor, D3670, and his spouse, Jeom Soon Lee

Jim and Susan Bodenner are passionate about the plight of developing countries, especially when it comes to the need for potable drinking water in underserved communities.

Six years ago the residents of Bishop Hills Elder Care Community in Rockford, Michigan contributed $400 to help fund a pilot program designed to test the effectiveness of a practical BioSand Water Filter in the Dominican Republic. The pilot was so successful that Rotary Club resources across the United States and Canada, including Michigan, contributed $800,000 to help fund the program. The success of the BioSand Water Filter has been dramatic and this simple affordable technology has now been expanded to include Haiti and Honduras. “It’s a story that is worth hearing about,” say Jim and Susan, “and we’re on a mission to share it.” During the past two year Jim has spoken twice about the BioSand Water Filter at the United Nations and the project has attracted international attention.

Jim is employed by International Aid as the Director of Water Initiatives and he holds a masters degree in business and a law degree from Northern Illinois University. Jim is involved in the global distribution of the plastic version of the BioSand Water Filter – the HydrAid™ filter to developing countries around the world. www.HydrAid.org

In addition, Jim and Susan own and operate Bishop Hills Elder Care Community in Rockford, Michigan. Susan, who holds a masters degree in social work, is Bishop Hills’ administrator. Like Jim, she is an evangelist for clean drinking water in developing countries.

The Bodenners are members of the Rotary District 6290 World Community Service Committee and the Rockford Rotary Club. Jim is a Past President of Rockford Rotary and is currently the Vice Chair of the Rotarian Water and Sanitation Action Group.
